Last September, eight Regatta staff took part in a challenge – to scale the four highest peaks in the Lake District – Scafell, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw – in less than 24 hours. They completed the challenge in 17 hours and – together with Regatta’s generous charity matching scheme – raised £5,450 for charity.
The charities chosen were two appeals set up in memory of Delia Longley, mum of the Regatta Family for 2009, who died in a car crash in February 2010, leaving a devastated husband and three children. Daughter India was also injured.
Regatta’s Gill Russell said: “It was with great pleasure that we were able to finally hand over a cheque for £5,000 to Delia’s husband, Darren Longley and his family which has helped them support The Rocking Horse Appeal at Brighton Children's Hospital, where India was looked after the crash, the Kent Air Ambulance who airlifted Delia and India to hospitals after the accident and Jellybeanz in South Africa, an organisation that helps children from the Cape Town area.”
Darren and family were overwhelmed with the support.
He said: “I would just like to say thanks once more from all the family to everyone at Regatta and to all the people who took part or generously donated their time or money to raise such a fantastic amount for Delia's charities.”
A donation of £450 has also been given to Keswick Mountain Rescue Team – although fortunately, they were not needed during the challenge!
