Tesco is introducing a nationwide schoolwear embroidery service following a successful pilot earlier this year. According to Tesco, the service offers parents whose children need a bespoke uniform a “cheaper alternative to specialist suppliers”.
Tesco sweatshirts embroidered with a school’s emblem are from £7 and a twin pack of polo shirts are from just £10. This is 40 per cent less than the current market rate.
Over 1,000 embroidered garments were sold to parents at 70 schools taking part in the trial. Children from schools in Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield and Hertfordshire will wear the clothing from September.
Positive feedback from parents and teachers on the quality, convenience and cost of the embroidery demonstrated the need and desire for a better value service to help families manage the expense of school uniforms.
Tesco director, Lucy Neville-Rolfe, said: "With household budgets remaining tight, we want to offer top quality school uniform for everyone. By providing embroidery for polo shirts and sweatshirts at an affordable price, we're helping families sometimes caught in an expensive trap. With the success of the trial we are also hoping to extend this service into school sportswear in due course.”
Tesco is offering all parents the chance to nominate their school for the embroidery service at www.tesco.com/clothing as the service rolls out nationwide.
With many schools also opting for academy status over the next year there will be an even greater need for reasonably priced bespoke uniforms, Tesco suggest.
A recent report from the Local Government Association argued it will be difficult for some parents forced to pay out for new academy uniforms. It is calling on schools to minimise the extra costs and ensure uniforms are available from a number of suppliers to encourage competition.
This year Tesco launched its “best ever” school uniform with more quality features and benefits than ever before, whilst still keeping at last year’s low prices. A standard polo shirt is 92p; a girl’s long sleeve shirt is £1; boy’s trousers are £2.50 and girl’s skirts are £2.50.
Tesco introduced sealed, non kick down hems, increased pocket sizes on boys’ trousers and following mums feedback, extended adjustable waists on trousers up to 12/13 years.
