“Repeat sales dominate this sector. Consistency is key and all the schoolwear brands we stock recognise this,” comments Andrea Charteris, PenCarrie’s customer services manager.

“New products in this sector often fall into the peripherals category (I’m thinking of items such as school bags, kids’ base layers and clothing for after-school club wear). Yet the add-on sales value of these items is usually significant and it is worth highlighting them to schools.”

New jog, track and dance pants for kids come from AWDis (JH071B), Canterbury (CN90B) and Skinni Minni (SM61). Teamed with sweatshirts they make ideal active leisurewear for school outings, holiday trips and other extra-curricular activities. PenCarrie stocks a huge choice of sweats (in an amazing array of colours) from Jerzees Schoolgear, Fruit of the Loom, AWDis, Finden & Hales, Gildan, and Hanes.

Jackets brand Regatta has now launched a range of bags including the RG403 Scholar Backpack. BagBase and Quadra, whose entire ranges are stocked by PenCarrie, also provide a wide selection of book bags, gymsacs, backpacks and monostraps for school use.

Base layers are becoming a sportswear essential for many schools. Professional rugby clothing brand Canterbury has just introduced the CN60B Kids Long Sleeve Cold Base Layer. Soft shell jackets for children are favoured by some schools as a water repellent alternative to the traditional blazer. Result’s RS121B Kids Classic Soft Shell Jacket, introduced for autumn 2009, has sold well in its first season; Regatta’s RG245 Kids Uproar Soft Shell Jacket is new for 2010.

However, the schoolwear staples of tees, polos and sweats continue to dominate the sector. Top sellers include raglan sweatshirts from Jerzees Schoolgear and Fruit of the Loom (7620B and SS8B in particular).

V neck sweatshirts, a popular alternative to the classic sweater, are Jerzees Schoolgear’s 272B and Whytes’ WH9B. Jerzees Schoolgear’s 273B Kids Cardigan is also a best selling style. Short sleeved and long sleeved pique polo shirts from Jerzees Schoolgear and Fruit of the Loom are regular favourites too (539B/SS11B and 569LB/SS45B).
