It really is that simple to get started
Digital printing of images onto garments is probably the fastest growing method of decorating finished garments. Robert Miller, managing director of J & B Sewing Machine Co gives us his take...

From T shirts to hoodies and sweatshirts the ability to produce one-off garments has seen the digital print business quickly establish its own position in this sector.

As simple to use as a normal desktop printer, direct to garment printers produce bright and vibrant prints on all styles and colours of garments.

Recent developments in white ink and the technology used to deliver this to the garment have eliminated many of the problems previously associated with this. Now, with minimum maintenance, dark garments are as easy to produce as white and pastel garments.

New inks, released by AnaJet will allow printing on Polyester, nylon and spandex and this has further stretched the versatility of these machines.

Businesses that currently are expanding into digital printing are:

  • Screen printers
  • Embroiderers
  • Promotional products distributors
  • Signmakers
  • Custom T shirt stores
  • Fashion stores
  • Quick print shops
  • Gift shops
  • Trophy and engraving shops

New start-ups are often home-based businesses where the principal maintains existing employment and runs the business in parallel to minimize start-up expenses.

A digital printing machine, coupled with an embroidery machine is virtually a "business in a box"! All that is needed is a location with footfall and the sales will inevitably follow.

A huge benefit of digital printing is it reduces inventory as there is no longer any need to carry large stocks. A screen printer will demand large volumes to amortize set up costs. If a design bombs, then stock is either sold at a loss, detracting from profitable sales, or sits there gathering dust.

Even if a design sells well, it is almost impossible to get the size mix correct. With direct to garment printing you just need blank shirts and print to order.

The authoritative 2007 Decorated Apparel Universe Study stated that the apparel decoration industry is a $44 billion market in the US of which an estimated $22 billion is printed garments. Where the US is now, we follow in a year or two!

It is important that people choose carefully when buying their printer and ensuring the supplier is financially stable and can offer both short and long term backup and continuity of consumables and spare parts.
