FRUIT OF THE LOOM
Organic move is bearing fruit
Published:  03 July, 2009

Alison McKenzie, Fruit of the Loom's European brand director, explains the background to the company's move into organic cotton apparel and what the new products bring to the promotional wear portfolio.

Q. Please describe the new Organic Cotton Ts.

A. There are three Organic Cotton T styles to choose from men's, Lady-Fit and children's. We felt it was important to supply a complete range that covers kids and adults. The T shirts are made from 100% organic cotton (140gm/m2). They have 1x1 rib binding on the neckline and a printed Fruit of the Loom back neck label. All styles have side seams and shaping to the shoulders for an exceptionally comfortable fit. The men's style is available in S-XXL, the Lady-Fit in XS-XL and the children's fits kids from 3-4 years - 14-15 years.

Q. What prompted the launch of the new Organic Cotton Ts?

A. We appreciate the importance of the T shirt to our customers and to the promotional clothing market generally. We constantly research customer and market demand, and we invest heavily in an ongoing programme of T shirt development. The new organic cotton Ts resulted from that R&D programme. Our customers' demands were for promotional T shirts in organic cotton that retain all the advantages of conventional Fruit of the Loom garments. Our research reveals that organic cotton garment sales are showing a 20% year-on-year growth in some European markets. Demand for organic cotton promotional wear has also been increasing steadily in recent years. We feel sure that our Organic Cotton Ts will only help to accelerate the development of this sector of the market.

Q. Your Organic Cotton Ts are made from certified organic cotton yarn: how important is the certification process?

A. It is difficult to overstate the importance of certification. Every batch of yarn is certified by the Control Union to the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS). This is the most stringent certification process available for organic textiles. The certification process sets necessary standards and reassures customers and end users that they are buying genuine organic cotton products.

Q. The new T shirts are available in natural (undyed) colour only. Are there any plans to introduce colours?

A. The 100% organic cotton we use is unbleached and undyed. This gives the garments a natural appearance, which reinforces their positioning as totally natural, environmentally friendly products. Our research indicates that that is what most customers want from their organic cotton promotional wear. However, we are always receptive to market demands, and will be monitoring customer feedback closely.

Q. The Organic Cotton T costs more than conventional cotton Ts. Are promotional wear customers prepared to pay a premium for organics in today's market?

A. Organic cotton yarn is more expensive than conventional cotton yarn, which means that our Organic Cotton Ts do cost a bit more than our other T shirt styles - almost twice the price. However, we are confident that there will continue to be a growing demand for these products, and early sales figures support this view.
