OROTORO
Setting the standards for ethical garments
Published:  03 July, 2009

Orotoro have been in the wholesale market for just over a year and despite the economic downturn we have seen a rapid growth in sales and expanded our range.

Consumers are becoming more and more aware of environmental accountability. Our bespoke customers will only use factories that comply with specific certifications and the traceability of all cotton is vital. The print and promotional market also seems to be following this lead - we are often asked questions relating to our environmental policies.

At Orotoro our efforts are directed at nullifying carbon emissions through initiatives such as organic farming, power generation via wind turbines, and zero discharge water recycling plants. Again, there are certain industry standards such as Oeko-Tex 100 and Environmental Policy [ISO-14001], which lead the way in this field. They deal with issues such as minimisation of waste, and efficient and environmentally friendly use of energy.

All our products are produced from 100% organic Indian cotton and certified by the Soil Association.

Consumers are confident that this means something and has credibility.

Bringing together fresh colours and styles in organic cotton has been our aim and the response to the range has been great.

Our men's tee is available in 16 fashion colours. We chose a mid-fit classic cut in 180gsm cotton. We feel that the fresh colours and retail quality of the product is what sets us apart from other brands.

For men's hoods we chose a heavyweight 380gsm three thread fleece. The detail on the hood includes bar tacks, cover stitch, double lined hood and thick draw cords. Best sellers so far are the Kelly green and Amparo blue.

Our girls' hoods have similar attention to detail; we have raw edge on the hem, bar tacks, and double lining in the hood. They are made in 320gsm-carbonised fleece to give a lovely soft feel and they are available in eight fashion colours. The poppy red and spring green are our current best sellers.

Our girls' tee is a 160gsm mid fit garment produced with fine gauge jersey, available in 12 fashion colours.

From talking to our customers it was clear that there was a gap in the market for high quality kids' organic clothing. With this in mind we set about producing our range.

Our sizing starts at three to four and goes through to 11 to 12 years. We have started with four colours including Kelly green and pink flambé, with a range that reflects the style and quality of the adults

Orotoro's mission statement is "To produce ethically made garments through sustainable sources."

We are increasingly aware that it is only when the environmental and social accountability issues are addressed, that products can be deemed as "ethically made".

So by addressing these factors as well as farming organic cotton, we are pleased to be setting the standard for ethical garment manufacturing.
