A gem of an idea from Xpres
Published:  05 June, 2009

Rhinestone application for textiles just got easier thanks to a new process unique to Castle Donington based transfer systems specialists, Xpres.

The new trademarked Gem Tec process is designed to produce stunning visual effects by applying rhinestones onto textiles.

The process will particularly appeal to customers who already have the best-selling GX-24 Xpres Cut cutter. With the addition of R-Wear studio software - developed by Xpres in association with Roland - and a heat press, you are ready to go.

An added advantage of the software is that it will calculate the cost per print.

Xpres spokesman, Ryan Hornbuckle, told Printwear & Promotion: "This is a unique new process that we have developed ourselves and it currently has a patent pending.

"Gem Tec is huge. It has already been very well received at shows this year and is proving very popular.

"In the current climate, we are finding that established businesses are looking to diversify their product offer. There are other ways of applying rhinestones which are very much more expensive, but the cost of Gem Tec and the speed with which you can apply rhinestones makes it unique."

Russell explains how it works.

Using R-wear studio softwear, it's easy to design a logo or name.

Stencil material is then positioned in he GX-24 Xpres Cut cutter, which then cuts out the pattern in a series of holes sized to accommodate the rhinestones which come in 3 and 4mm sizes.

The stencil is then removed from its backing and placed on a tray.

Rhinestones are then spread over the stencil using a soft sponge pad. Because the hot-fix rhinestones are flat on one side and domed on the other, they will automatically position themselves in the stencil holes.

Stencil application film is then carefully applied to the rhinestones and peeled off.

The film carrying the rhinestones is then heat applied to your chosen textile.

As well as producing rhinestone designs, the GX-24 will also produce transfers using any of the Xpres garment films featured in this year's catalogue.

You can also combine rhinestones with garment films for great design impact.

"New for this year is our fashion range of films which includes 12 with different effects," said Mr Hornbuckle.

The range includes Glitter, Sparkle, Textile Foil, Marble, Wild, Metallic, Twill, Carbonium, Spangle, Jeans, Snake and Paint, with a variety of colours and patterns in each range.

Gem Tec is a response to current trends. "Rhinestones are very, very popular in retail and for the fashion market, but also for hen parties, it's fantastically popular," Mr Hornbuckle adds. "It's quick, easy to use and very cost effective."

The rhinestones come in bags of 14,400 in 11 colours. Stencils can be saved and re-used for repeat orders and it as easy to produce one offs as it is several hundreds.

The GX-24 Xpres Cut cutter is priced £1350 and the software is £200 (both exc VAT).
