The ultragraphics cutter

Low set-up costs and the ability to produce shorter runs of personalised clothing and gifts quickly and profitably are the major benefits of incorporating a digital transfer system into your business, says Xpres, which has introduced a number of new technologies and consumables for 2007.

The Ultragraphics system is a versatile package that combines the best-selling Xpres Cut vinyl cutter with a choice of printers. In addition to producing single and multi colour logos, this system will also produce full colour, fine detail transfers, says Xpres. The vinyl cutter has an optical alignment system that automatically detects registration marks produced by the printer, enabling fast and accurate cutting out of transfers.

The most popular printer choice for the Ultragraphics system is an inkjet printer which is combined with Durabrite inks and Xpres Ink Jet Dark transfer paper. This process offers superior print quality and resulting transfers are easy to apply to both cotton and polyester garments. And Ink Jet Dark can be washed at 80°C, making it ideal for work wear, corporate wear and sports wear applications, adds Xpres.

“Xpres introduced sublimation to the European market more than 25 years ago,” it says. “Since then continual research and development has seen its use increase dramatically in the personalisation industry.”

Sublimation is a process used to imprint a design or image onto products with a polymer-based surface. First the artwork is designed or scanned into a computer and reversed to produce a mirror image. The design is then printed using sublimation ink onto sublimation transfer paper, and heat applied to the receptive product such as a coated mug using a heat press.

There’s a choice of two Epson printers for sublimation printing – the R1800 (A3) and the D88 (A4). For the lowest cost transfers, these are available with feeder systems for use with bottles of Xpres Subli-Print sublimation ink.

Xpres also offers a wide range of heat presses, an extended selection of sublimation printables and a range of garments specially designed for sublimation.
