Design students take the plunge with Gymphlex
Published:  25 April, 2006

Contour Design students recently undertook a challenging brief on behalf of Specialist Schoolwear manufacturer Gymphlex to develop a contemporary new swimwear collection.

The students from Leicester De Montfort University participated in the project and developed some inspirational designs. Gymphlex is now developing winning submissions with a view to becoming a commercial collection within their next brochure.

Gymphlex chose three outstanding designs to be awarded the top prizes. These were, in first place - Lizzie Malins, who researched the market and gave her collection a contemporary twist with the addition of a hooded jumper.

Second placed Penny Rounce paid particular attention to Gymphlex’s flexible manufacturing. She created a striking and adaptable design that could be easily personalised for the client by using of school or club colours and text. In third place, Angela Shield developed a collection that took its inspiration from the Bondai Beach lifestyle. Within this entry the men’s garments were very well developed and Gymphlex felt the collection would appeal to a wide range of ages.

Angelica Payne, Fashion & Contour Lecturer at De Montfort University comments on the value of the swimwear competition for the students, ‘This project gave my students the opportunity to gain practical experience of fulfilling a commercial brief from a real client. The fact that the students were required to develop a full range of swimwear meant that they had to submit very well thought out designs that were flexible enough to be applied to several garments within the range.

‘All in all the project gave the students a very good introduction to the commercial world of design, demanding that they paid attention to design, pattern making, sewing and the production capabilities of any factory.’

This initiative was part of a student competition where Gymphlex provided materials and awarded the winning designers with funds towards their studies. The students all attended a tour of the Gymphlex factory in Horncastle, where they gained a practical understanding of a real life production environment.
