New research from Premierline Direct reveals that SMEs are "keeping it real" when it comes to business, abandoning their dreams because they lack the necessary skills to fulfil them and prefer to make money instead.
More than half (57%) of SMEs are missing out on running their dream business with a quarter (25%) saying it’s because they do not have the right skills. For 24% of SMEs making money is priority, believing their dream business wouldn’t be as profitable and 20% don’t consider it a feasible option. In addition, 22% said they do not have the time to set up their ideal venture.
Despite the perception that many small businesses are started by entrepreneurs fulfilling a life-long ambition, 73% of SMEs have no plans to actually run their aspirational businesses.
While the reality is that most business owners establish themselves in property, retail and construction industries, if SMEs were to live their dreams, the poll instead showed the most popular industries would be IT, culture and sport, followed closely by travel and tourism.
Top 10 dream industries are:
- IT
- Culture and sport
- Travel and tourism
- Hospitality
- Music
- PR and marketing
- Property development
- Retail
- Agriculture
- Antiques
Chris Little, managing director of Premierline Direct said: “Our research shows that many SMEs take a practical approach to the nature of the business they run, basing their decision on their skills and the cost effectiveness of their operations. With business owners taking such a level-headed approach, they are clearly dedicated to making their company a success.”
