Direct to product ink jet printing opened up a whole new market when it was introduced only a few years ago. Up until then it was just not economical to print small numbers of full colour prints but companies like DTG and Your Embroidery Services Ltd were among the first to introduce us to this new technology which, at last, made the uneconomical affordable.
Initially the printing was reserved for white (or very light coloured) T shirts but the industry soon wanted more. They wanted, and to a degree needed, to be able to print onto dark shirts especially black but to do this, as with screen print, a white ink would need to be laid down first. The white ink was duly developed together with a method of not only delivering it but also curing it without removing the platen from the machine. The one thing that could not be done, until now, was to print the white and the colours at the same time. Even in screen print this is something that still cannot be done. The concept of delivering the two together, knowing that the white ink must be cured (at least to a degree) before the colour is laid down, seemed impossible, until now.
To understand just how ground breaking DTG One Pass Fast is let’s first look at the current processes used in printing a black T shirt:
- Pre-treat shirt
- Mount onto platen
- Load design
- Print white ink
- Print CMYK ink
- Cure shirt
Now let’s look at the new method:
- Pre-treat shirt
- Mount onto platen
- Load design
- Print white and CMYK ink
- Cure shirt
There is only one process less in the new system and the cynical amongst you may now be having doubts about how important this development really is. But remember that the missing process accounts for about half of the actual printing time. The current method for all machines of this type requires the printer to make one pass for the white ink and a second one for the CMYK effectively making two prints whereas the One Pass Fast only needs one pass for both prints – printing time halved!
The reduction in print time will redefine the profitability of the machine and, of course, the unit cost per print improving dramatically the competitiveness of the machines. It will make it more viable to handle the larger orders that previously the machines could not compete with - screen printing for instance. It will also affect other industries as it competes at a much higher level.
The system is patent pending ensuring that it remains the sole property of DTG with only its customers gaining the advantage.
Using One Pass Fast on its own will have an amazing effect on production but when you combine this with the new PreJet, which automates the pre-treat process, then the competitive bar raises even higher.
You still have to pre-treat the shirt but the PreJet does it quicker and with more accuracy and consistency ready for the one pass print that is now possible.
Roy Burton, MD of YES Ltd, said: “The One Pass Fast is just unbelievable and something that all in the industry thought to be impossible. The massive increase in production will put our customers light-years ahead. It’s good to know as well that, as it is subject to patent pending, this system will be exclusive to them.”
DTG One Pass Fast is a breakthrough but it is the magnitude of the breakthrough that will amaze most on-lookers, according to YES Ltd.
Roy Burton continued: "The original technology for this style of printing only came into being a few years ago and yet DTG and Your Embroidery Services Ltd have taken hold of it and defined it in new ways. Even before One Pass Fast DTG were seen as the defining company where this technology is concerned but with this latest introduction they have established themselves as unique in this field not only in what they have developed but also in their approach to the industry. DTG constantly strive for the next breakthrough which will give their customers an advantage in this competitive market."
Current machines offering the single pass system are The Viper and The K3 but it is likely that others will follow in the near future.
