The promotions market is a hugely important part of the overall sales and marketing strategy for Powertraveller, the UK manufacturer of the powermonkey – the UK’s favourite portable charger for mobiles and other gadgets.
This year Powertraveller won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for their range of portable chargers. And according to the company, the prestigious award has helped increase interest from promotional companies both in the UK and in Europe.
Celebrity fans of the powermonkey include Stephen Fry, Jenson Button, Guy Ritchie, Kelly Brook, Lily Allen and Daisy Rowe, among others.
A powermonkey is ideal for keeping handy for when you discover your battery is about to go flat – whether that’s on your mobile, iPod, digital camera, PDA, hand-held games console etc.
A fully-juiced up powermonkey will recharge a mobile phone three times fully before it needs recharging itself and it will give iPod users an additional 40 hours of music.
The powermonkey and the powermonkey-eXplorer portable chargers can be easily branded and are popular with promotional merchandiser for corporate gifts.
The company offers a service for larger quantities to be branded at source from their factory in China and can produce bespoke products if required.
The powermonkey-eXplorer shown here was produced for Npower in their corporate colours.
One of the most recent and biggest promotional deals was with Esso in Italy and Germany where the powermonkey-eXplorer was a gift choice in a catalogue for their 12 month-long loyalty programme.
The deal was brokered by Vicky Kinasz, managing director of the Promotions Practice.
Powertraveller has also entered the licensing arena for the first time with two of their products bundled and targeted at the pre-teen market.
A spokesman told us: "Our emergency charger, the powerchimp and the in-car charger the motormonkey have been bundled together with a special gaming adapter pack (tips for PSP and DS/DS lite included) under licenses with Disney (Hannah Montana) and SEGA (Sonic). This deal was again brokered by Vicky at The Promotions Practice.
"When we launched the motormonkey – our new in-car charger – our marketing budget was very small! However, by concentrating our PR strategically with the 40-odd motoring magazines and placing editiorial competitions for the relatively small price of five units per title, we were able to drive considerable traffic to our website.
"Today the motormonkey is our best-selling product by volume. We use competitions strategically often to guarantee editorial coverage in titles that we believe are important to us.
"All our products are designed to military specification – this is an important point. There are other products on the market but ours have withstood some very stringent field-testing before they are launched.
"They make ideal corporate gifts because they are proven quality products. Companies that choose them as gifts like the value that this bestows on their business. They also like the powermonkey because it comes with ten tips for the most popular mobiles/gadgets plus a worldwide travel plug."
