Entrepreneurial spirit will help win the day
Published:  21 August, 2009

Glimmers of hope in the housing market and car industry are encouraging, but with the CBI predicting that it will be a long road to recovery, no one would blame anyone currently in business for adopting a cautious approach to investment.

It is encouraging, therefore, to see companies within the printwear sector that are still prepared to invest, with an eye on the long game.

One such company is embroidery firm, Essential (formerly EED), whose founder, George Georgiou, has recently spent £100,000 on a new screen printing facility.

Under his helmsmanship, the company has grown from a two-man, 1,000 sq ft operation 11 years ago to a thriving company employing 38 people at a new 18,000sq ft base in Dunstable (see feature on p76).

In keeping with the likes of Sir Alan Sugar, Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne, George is a born entrepreneur with obvious focus, passion and an insatiable desire to succeed. His mantra is quality. And, of course, service.

At the end of the day, he knows that if he doesn't deliver, there's always someone else nipping at his heels.

I was fascinated to learn that George's decision to move into embroidery began with the flip of a coin. And it got me wondering what, exactly, makes an entrepreneur?

Some say they are born, not made. But if you look at their character traits, most have that steely determination to win, with a large amount of courage and a fearless drive to take a risk thrown in for good measure.

If you believe in something, it's half the battle - isn't it? - whether you're a good salesman or not.

I haven't been in this industry long, but without exception, I have come away from every interview impressed by the commitment, the positivity and self-belief that successful companies - and those at the top - share.

Elsewhere in this issue, we are looking at the serious matter of product safety. We invited international textile standards expert Sue Bolton to explain how the current general product safety legislation applies to products within the printwear and promotions sector. I commend you to read it.

Have a great month and stay profitable.
