Bags2Keep, official supplier to Modbury, Britain's first plastic bag free town, has launched a new range of organic cotton string bags.
Incredibly lightweight, they can hold up to 40lbs and come with short or long handles in bright and natural colours. The Cornish company claims to be the first in the country to be both Soil Association and Free Trade licensed.
For the cotton bag ranges, which can only be sourced abroad, the company ensures its suppliers work to the Ethical Trading initiative basecode1, which sets out a series of fair employment guidelines that must be adhered to. Branded under Bags2Keep's Vert Vivant range, the bags are made in India, with suppliers sharing the company's commitment to high environmental and ethical principles, and whose workers receive a fair wage.
Set up in 2005, owners Rod and Barbara Baker define Bags2Keep as a truly ethical business. Rod said: "When we set up the company, we were determined to ensure our products were as ethically and environmentally sound as we could possibly make them, even if it meant paying a premium.
"We wanted our string bag range to feel good as well as look good. It is important to us that our customers know that we are passionate about our business, sharing their concern for the planet, and that this translates into a range of products which they can trust."
