Blue Max: Quality everywhere you look
Blue Max has built itself a formidable reputation in the industry on quality, consistency and value, offering above average quality garments, at below average prices.
Published:  31 July, 2009

Blue Max is a leading importer of schoolwear, leisurewear and sportswear to the UK.  The highest per centage of the portfolio is given over to schoolwear and with Stag Knitwear now firmly part of the business, Blue Max is proud to be one of the largest schoolwear stockists in the country.

When you buy from Blue Max you buy a guarantee of quality, which you can trust.  Garments are manufactured at carefully selected factories in the Far East and at Blue Max's own factory in Poland.

Visits are made a minimum of once a year to ensure consistency and that ethical standards in the work place are maintained.

Only high performance fabrics are used, and stringent production procedures are employed all the way down the manufacturing line.

All garments comply with the most current legislation and zips and toggle closures meet rigorous standards of safety.

Invest in a Blue Max Penthouse Polo Shirt and you invest in the best in the market place.  This is a garment that is of such quality that it has set an industry standard which competitors are hard placed to match.  It is a shirt that is built to last with its anti-pill qualities, ribbed cuffs, taped neckband and razor sharp plackets.  The super tight knit weave also makes it an ideal base for embroidery.

But it's not just the quality.  Blue Max offers the quantity, too.  The range is kept deliberately core with the emphasis on extensive colour and size variations.  For instance the Blue Max Penthouse Polo offers 13 sizes from 2 years to 60", each in a variety of 17 colour combinations and a choice of self colour or horn buttons. That's a staggering total of 221 SKUs! Customers can also choose from tipped, ladies and cotton variations.

At Blue Max, customer service is a top priority.  Blue Max is very much a family business still owned and run by David and Mary Fawcus, who originally set up the business 22 years ago.  Despite now employing 80 people in the UK and Poland and with the capacity to carry five million garments on site, the company still prides itself on its strong family values and the customer service element is still at the forefront of the company ethos.

A huge investment programme worth in excess of £1 million last year at the company headquarters in Trowbridge means that Blue Max is now in a position to offer an even better service.

It is no coincidence that the company has just announced that is has achieved 99.8% picking accuracy.  A major chunk of the investment was channelled into a brand new software programme and a highly sophisticated bar-coded picking system has virtually eliminated the potential for error.

Ten minutes after an order has been received by the sales team, the pickers are out on the warehouse floor. They employ the state of the art hand-held radio controlled bar code scanners to scan a bar code confirming they are at the correct location. A second bar code confirms the correct product is in the location to minimise errors.   "The new system also allows us to track the whole picking process, enabling us to accurately manage our staff requirements," comments Ian Ryden, Chief Operating Officer. "This means that we will now be able to plan in extra pickers to fulfil demand at busy times of year.  The virtually fool proof bar code system also negates the need for costly training."

The investment has also resulted in a brand new state of the art warehouse measuring over 2 million cubic feet with the capacity to store up to five million garments all year round.  "We can function as a warehouse for our customers," continues Ian. "They can order whatever they want, in whatever quantities, whenever they want it.  We have the stock available 365 days of the year and rarely have stock-outs for any length of time."

A two-tier mezzanine section in the existing warehouse has also been installed, providing space for hanging garments.  The system has now enabled Blue Max to store up to 100,000 blazers and skirts at any one time.

A highly sophisticated Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) racking system has been installed in the new warehouse space, along with state of the art fork-lift trucks which also facilitate and improve picking efficiency.

All orders placed before 4pm are picked for delivery the following day.

Despite a continuing rocky financial climate, Blue Max remains a stable force.  "We are in a position to offer all of our customers the assurance of a highly reliable supplier with financial stability," concludes Ian, "and a warehouse stocked to the gunnels all year round."
