Well that's another fine mess, Alistair...
Published:  05 June, 2009

Now when I was at school, maths was never my strong point. Trigonometry was truly trying. Algebra was anathema. Logarithms were loathed. But give me some basic adding and subtraction, and I was fine. The basics of maths, however, seem to have evaded our troubled Chancellor Alistair Darling, as evidenced by his latest attempt at balancing the country's books. And don't even get me started on MPs' expenses.

Nobody would doubt that we are in tricky times, and the next generation is going to have to dig deep to help us out of the mess. With a fiscal black hole that would make even Dr Who quake in his boots, we're in a bit of a sorry state.

But it's not all doom and gloom. As our marketing guru, Paul Clapham reveals this month, there are some positives to be gleaned from this year's Budget for the printwear and promotions industry.

And if you are looking for a shining example of how a business should be run, then turn to page 46 for our profile on teamwear and bespoke garment suppliers, Team Colours.

This family-run business started out supplying garments to the catalogue industry. But when catalogue companies began sourcing cheaper garments overseas, some quick thinking was needed. In a stroke of sheer genius, the company re-invented itself as Team Colours and developed a whole new, niche market.

And who'd have thought, it all started with a netball dress?

We've also spoken to Gordon Glenister, director general of the British Promotional Merchandise Association this month. And if you're in the printwear and promotional goods industry, you cannot afford to ignore his advice.

On another note, have you checked out the Printwear & Promotion magazine website lately? Over the coming weeks, we will be developing the site and giving you the chance to have your say about industry matters. Visit www.printwearandpromotion.co.uk and, if there is anything you would like to see on there, let me know.

Whatever you're doing this month, stay profitable and here's to a blazing June
