Maybe Benjamin Button got it right after all and time really is being turned on its head. Campbell Cameron, Sales & Marketing Director with RSK Tech, investigates
With middle-aged dads now jostling on a Saturday morning with the cool dudes hanging out and blocking the aisles in the likes of River Island and Topshop (there more to chat with mates than actually buy anything), it was inevitable that toddlers would want to muscle in on the act and ditch the Ladybird jimjams in favour of the latest designer label hi tech clubwear and multi-coloured sneakers adorned with exclusive graphic artwork - just like the old man!
Forget the Pink Pound, Single Young Females, Dinkies and Silver Surfers - babies and toddlers is where the real money is! All of Granny and Grandpa's generous donations and Mum and Dad's bribes tucked away in the Jemima Puddleduck piggy bank waiting to be spent.
Joking aside, children's wear is a force to be reckoned with and an ideal opportunity to tap into the last bastion of the retail sector still largely immune to the ravages of the financial crisis. After all, who could possibly resist when your darling daughter flashes her big eyes at you and gurgles lovingly in your ear "Daddie, Daddie. Please buy me that lovely hand-finished spoon and pusher set engraved with my name just under that heatsealed portrait photo of me you love so much" just before she deposits the entire contents of her last bottle of formula milk in the pouch of your custom-embroidered hoodie.
Like father like son
Seriously though, young kids just want to look like their Mums and Dads. Well when they're still cute little angels they do. Until, that is, they morph into the creature from the blue lagoon, otherwise known as Kevin, who wouldn't be seen dead walking down the same side of the street as you. And their long-suffering parents of course want nothing more than to dress their kids up like little adults in their own image.
And what better way to do it than when the kids are tucked up in bed, Lara Croft's been put back in her tomb for the night and Mum and Dad can kick back, pour themselves a relaxing glass of wine and have their turn at playing on the computer.
Designing your child's clothes online can be really fun and allows you to pull out all the stops from a creative point of view. And the great thing is that everything you would normally want to see on a full size garment you can also do in miniature to reproduce the same effect on a scaled down format on a child's t-shirt, babygro or romper.
Mum's the word
For example, RSK Tech's designer comes with flexible printable region settings which can be set per individual garment and for each individual size right down to the smallest children and toddler's sizes. So Mum, you can even kit Dad and your baby son out in identical caps and polos, in the same colour, with the same message and the same images all scaled to size. Just key in your message, choose a font you like, select the font size, add some special text effects such as contrasting colour outlines, and then you can position the message wherever you like within the printable region and still make further adjustments by stretching or shrinking the message to fit. You can then add in some artwork, or even a treasured photo, and again you simply stretch the image to the right size for the design.
