Promoting your company effectively and imaginatively lies at the heart of any business's success.
That's the message from Peter Middleton , who claimed the BPMA's Entrepreneur of the Industry Award for his innovative broadband sales and marketing TV channels.
The 49 year-old from London has more than 20 years in the video production industry which he used to forge his own firm, Cre; 8, which has evolved over the past five years.
Across its portfolio is a range of eight stations which cover everything from sales and marketing techniques to offering insights into the must-have new promotional gadgets.
Like any industry, those in the pirntwear world can use the stations to enhance their marketing through the new broadband stations.
Working with tight budgets, Cre:8's turnover of nearly £450,000 for the last financial year certainly impressed judges. BPMA President David Lebond said:
"Peter has made a success by being proactive in his approach, gaining support from associations and institutes, demonstrating to them the power of broadband TV as a marketing and communications medium."
As the award-winner admits, he's sacrificed many evenings in order to start his company from scratch, but feels that his hard work has now been vindicated.
How do you feel about winning the award?
"I was so surprised to win as I was just not expecting it. It's great to to be recognised for the work we have been doing in trying to revolutionise the way in which communication happens within the business to business world."
How will your innovation make a difference?
"Over the past 3 years we have seen big developments in video production. Broadband now has 420 million subscribers with 1 billion people using it- it's the biggest media market in the world. But the UK has been slow to adapt the use of broadband even though it's been around for a couple of years."
What is your best advice for anyone setting out in the promotional goods business?
"If you have an idea you should start on it straight away. So many people out there have great minds and some fantastic ideas but spend too much time thinking about them and not enough on actually implementing them. You might not be able to climb a mountain in a day, but taking an idea forward step by step is important. I have always believed it's important to have a clear goal in mind."
How important is marketing to businesses?
Marketing is vital which is why I've never understood why businesses equip their sales teams with awful powerpoint presentations- company's have got to make sure there is enough budget directed at promotion and marketing as it can have a big impact on sales. That's why so many businesses fail.
What plans do you have for 2009?
"There is a lot happening in the promotions industry and I think it's going to be a good year. Our company plans to move out of its studios that we hire in Battersea and develop our own site which will allow us to increase the number of stations we produce.
