Focus on: T-shirts
There seems no stopping the popularity of the t-shirt as one of the most enduring items of clothing in the printwear world. We caught up with Gordon Glenister, Director General, British Promotional Merchandise Association to get his take on the 2009 market.
Published:  02 February, 2009

"The T-shirt market is one that is growing in the promotional sector as digital printing technologies become more sophisticated and in turn, lead to a wider range of design opportunities," explains Gordon.

It's clearly expanding in its scope as T-shirts are being used in a more engaging way as companies use the garments to communicate promotional messages to customers, clients and staff. You may have noticed this at some supermarkets and petrol stations where staff wear a T-shirt which details the outlet's latest sales offer.

I believe the T-shirt market as a whole will continue to grow this year due to the versatility it offers as a promotional material. The freedom that comes with being able to personalise a T-shirt with a particular message due to the sophisticated printing technologies now available, means they may be more widely used as a marketing tool. That said, premium ranges of T-shirts may not flourish as much as the budget and mid-range counterparts due to the current economic climate.

T-shirts definitely work as an outlet for communicating a particular message, it's just a matter of getting the right personal touch and utilising the printing technologies available."

Underlining the BPMA director's optimism in this sector, there are now more styles and designs to choose from than ever before. For 2009, expect plenty of clothing ranges styled for women which demonstrate a fine level of detail being put into many shirt-designs by companies such as Fruit of the Loom, Skinnifit and US Basic.

Not only are shirts more stylish than ever, there are also those specialising in the more practical end of the workwear market which also a represents a growing area of business.

One such firm is RTY , which has a design which in either Fluorescent yellow or orange and with reflective striping conforms to the EN471 standard. They form the inner layer of the comprehensive RTY Safety Clothing layering system.

RTY Enhanced Visibility is aimed at the market where wearers want to stand out from the crowd but don't want to wear EN standard conforming designs. They are great for extrovert recreational use or if you want to know where your staff are in a mass of people. The EV081 T shirt is now in four colours including the recently introduced Enhanced Red and Enhanced Green.
