Ethical manufacturing makes a difference
Published:  16 January, 2009

Mantis World has won the Manufacturer Award at the Re:Fashion 2008 ethical fashion awards. The judges, including designer Katherine Hamnett and Daily Telegraph fashion director Hilary Alexander, measured entrants on their impact on world poverty, sustainability and the environment. Mantis World, in partnership with its affiliated Tanzanian factory, received the Manufacturer of the Year Award in the category of Making a Difference.

Mantis World's managing director, Prama Bhardwaj, said: "We were extremely honoured to have won this award, particularly in view of the high standards of other entries for this category. It's great, not only to have achieved recognition from our peers of our working practices, but to be able to support the Re:Fashion Awards to help raise awareness about ethical fashion. It also shows the diversity of our range with styles that cross the traditional line between promo wear and fashion, and which is available to all of our customers, no matter how large or small in the same quality, great choice and ethical transparency."

Almost all styles across the Mantis World family are made in Africa using combed cotton fabrics. The company works closely with its family owned factory in Tanzania where it oversees a vertical operation providing transparency at every production stage. Mantis World actively supports fair trade, fair wages and fair working conditions and is engaged in a process of continual improvement to ensure working conditions exceed international labour standards. To help improve standards, the company uses expert advice and regular independent social and environmental audits to monitor progress and guarantee compliance.
