South West-based T Shirt and Sons was invited to present developments in organic printed certified clothing at this year's Rite Group conference. Director of T Shirt and Sons, Andy Lunt, has been working with the Soil Association to pioneer a Global Organic Standards (GOTS) compliant organic ink system for the last six years.
In 2006, T Shirt and Sons was awarded the first European licence to print certified organic cotton textiles and is subsequently the only printer with a licence able to produce 100 per cent organic cotton apparel from seed to finished garment. This year's conference offered a platform for T Shirt and Sons to discuss the future for certified printed organic clothing.
What is certified organic textile printing? For a printed t-shirt to be certified organic by the Soil Association every input of its production has to be traceable from seed to finished printed garment. Every chemical involved in its production must be disclosed. This process is governed by (GOTS) criteria.
However, there is more to organic printing that ensuring the ink meets Soil Association standards including: factory waste monitoring; onsite water effluent filtering, testing and monitoring; and materials recycling. All Soil Association certified garments have a batch number and all inputs are recorded. This offers full traceability, eliminates contamination and ensures products are 100 per cent organic.
