A new certification label to ensure textile products and processes conform to international standards for ecology and social responsibility is now available in the UK.
Textile testing laboratory Shirley Technologies now provides certification under the Made in Green label, which brings together the three components of product, process and people under one single label.
For instance, to get qualify for Made in Green, the product itself has to be certified to Oeko-Tex 100; the process has to meet a certified environmental standard such as ISO 14001; while the production site must have a social certification in place, such as SA8000.
According to Shirley Technologies, it is the only eco scheme available that takes into account harmful substances, environmental issues and social accountability.
The label will help consumers to differentiate between higher quality and lower quality products and give assurance that the product contains no harmful substances, has been made in an environmentally friendly factory and in socially acceptable conditions, it says.
Full details on the new label will follow in the January issue of P&P.
