Widely regarded as the toughest event of only 16 of its type on the planet, Ironman Lanzarote comprises a 2.4 mile swim in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile marathon run. Lanzarote's reputation stems from its notorious bike course which climbs 2600 metres, twice the height of Ben Nevis, in high temperatures and winds of up to 40mph. 

The team comprised two Great Britain international athletes Joe Waugh and Helen Lawrence, (a former relay team member with Paula Radcliffe and World Student Games Triathlon Champion) from Northumberland plus Julie and Matt Webb from Merseyside, all of whom completed the gruelling event in great times despite the conditions making it tougher than it had been in many years. Helen and Julie both finished third in their respective age groups.
