When Fruit of the Loom launched its range of microfleece jackets in 2004, the company expected the new, lighter weight garments to supersede its original Fleece jackets, possibly replacing them altogether. As it transpires, the classic Fleece styles are performing better than ever, with the two types of outerwear complementing each other and helping Fruit of the Loom customers to maximise their outerwear sales.
"Far from tailing off, demand for the classic Full Zip and Half Zip Fleece jackets has continued to grow following the launch of the Micro range," states Alison Woodvine, European brand manager. "We've found that the Fleece and Micro jackets complement each other very well within our customers' activewear collections because the two ranges appear to answer the needs of separate and distinct market sectors."
The Full Zip and Half Zip Fleece are made from 300gsm 100% polyester pill-resistant fleece (except the smoke colourway, which uses a 75% polyester/25% viscose fibre blend). The jackets are designed as outdoor wear, (offering a comfortable alternative to a hard shell jacket in cold, dry weather), and are sold predominantly as work clothing - for example, to gardeners, van drivers and warehouse staff. The fleece fabric is both breathable and warm, and the jackets' classic cut ensures freedom of movement and day-long wearer comfort. The palette of six core corporate colours underlines the garments' positioning as workwear styles.
There are four Micro jackets: the men's Micro Jacket, Full Zip Hooded Micro Jacket and Zip Neck Micro Jacket; and the women-specific Lady-Fit Micro Jacket. They are all made from 250gsm 100% polyester pill-resistant microfleece. The lighter weight fabric makes them as comfortable to wear indoors as outdoors. "The Micro jackets can be worn in place of a traditional knitted jumper," explains Woodvine. "They are especially popular for staff that frequently move between indoor and outdoor areas during their working day - car salesmen are an obvious example. A microfleece jacket keeps the salesman warm when they are demonstrating cars on the forecourt, whilst its light weight and breathability mean that it is equally comfortable to wear when they return to the office to conclude the sale."
Woodvine adds that the more fitted silhouette and contemporary styling of the Micro products, plus the availability of the Lady-Fit style, make them an equally popular choice for leisurewear, retail and tourist merchandise. "The polyester microfleece offers a stable background for embroidered logos and designs and the choice of more fashionable colour options, such as brick red, stone and sky blue, answers directly to consumer preferences," she points out.
The men's Fleece and Micro styles are available in sizes ranging from S-XXL, and the Lady-Fit Micro Jacket comes in sizes XS-XL. All are available through Fruit of the Loom's extensive network of authorised wholesalers.
