Knitwear and Fleece: chalk and cheese but both thriving in their own different ways, says PenCarrie
Published:  07 October, 2008

The two totally separate categories of knitwear and fleece are well represented by PenCarrie.  Customer services manager, Andrea Charteris, notes that both sectors are thriving although at different levels and for different reasons. She explains: "Knitwear tends to have a more specific role while fleece is in much greater general demand. Knitwear's relaxed formality appeals to the corporate sector, particularly for office staff wear. Best quality lambswool sweaters are also popular as prestigious gifts at events such as golfing days. In contrast, fleece has much wider appeal and sells in greater volume as a result."

She continues: "Fleece also has a role to play in the corporate sector, associated much more with those working outdoors (for example, in construction, highway maintenance, garden centres, sports and recreation grounds) as well as for staff working in draughty or chilly areas (such car showrooms, warehouses, or supermarket cold stores). Fleece, more than the knitwear available in the promotional market, is also popular as a leisure garment and is readily bought and decorated for onward sale linked to all manner of outdoor events and activities."

Knitwear

As with all the clothing it supplies, PenCarrie adheres to a policy of stocking only top brands as the quality of the garments gives long-term satisfaction to users. In knitwear, you will see the Woolmark symbol of quality linked to many of the designs that PenCarrie offers. Two of the most popular corporate choices (both with Woolmark accreditation) come from Henbury: H730 is their Lambswool V-neck Sweater and H731 is the sleeveless version. Both are made from 100% lambswool and both are machine washable.

Highest quality 100% lambswool sweaters from leading golfwear brands Ashworth and Glenmuir are also much in demand, as prestigious gifts on golf days. Charteris comments: "The brands' logos appear on the sleeves of the sweaters and add greatly to the image of the company hosting the event (whose logo is of course embroidered elsewhere)."

She highlights two crew neck styles and two V-neck styles: Ashworth's AW61 Lambswool Crew Neck Sweater and Glenmuir's GM11 Morar Crew Neck Lambswool Sweater; plus Ashworth's AW62 Lambswool V-neck Sweater and Glenmuir's GM10 Lomond V-neck Lambswool Sweater. All four designs are Woolmark accredited.

"Cotton mix sweaters also have their place," continues Charteris, "particularly with companies who employ a younger workforce and who want to project a vibrant as well as a professional image through design and colour."

Hanes' HA781 Ladies V-neck Pullover fits the bill neatly: made from a soft cotton rich fabric with feminine styling, it comes in four colours including strawberry; while the HA681 V-neck Pullover for men, made from the same cotton rich knit, comes in avocado as well as the more traditional black and navy. Russell Collection also offers some fashion-forward knitwear designs.  For example, the Rib Knit Full Zip Cardigan in machine washable 50% cotton/50% acrylic Cottonblend is available in men's and women's versions (coded 714M and 714F respectively). Styling details on both include the two-way zip with matching colour pulls: sartorial elegance along with comfort at the desk.

Fleece

PenCarrie offers a huge choice in fleece for men and for women, with many styles available in children's sizes too. Fabric weights (and corresponding warmth levels) are various, from heavyweight to micro fleece. Garment designs include jacket styles, zip neck styles, and sleeveless gilets; some styles are ‘interactive' and are designed to be worn with another garment from the same brand (opening up extra sales opportunities for decorators). Plain coloured tops, tops with contrast trim, and tops that incorporate contrast colour panelling are all available.

Looking at heavyweight outdoor styles first, PenCarrie highlights a couple of popular styles from outdoor clothing specialists Result and Regatta.

Result's RS36 Active Fleece Jacket is available in nine colours; and Regatta's Thor III Fleece Jacket is available in eight colours. In micro fleece, Kariban and Slazenger have both introduced new styles for 2008, already selling well.

From Kariban, KB915 Divo Contrast Micro Fleece Gilet is perfect for autumnal months when it is slightly chillier; the brand's KB914 Silvio Zip Neck Contrast Micro Fleece has sleeves (but otherwise is the same).  Slazenger's new fleece styles include two micro fleece jackets which have full zip openings: SL66 is for men and SL68 is the ladies' version. Both come in the same choice of five plain colours plus three contrast colourways.
