The Beijing Olympics are in full swing and how refreshing it is to see the Brits doing well for a change (especially, dare I say it, after the disaster that was Euro 2008). Although it seems a way off yet, I'm sure those of you reading this will be no stranger to the opportunities that the 2012 Olympics will undoubtedly create for the printwear and promotional industry, particularly in terms of merchandise potential. But a quick Google search under some Olympics/promotional product-related headings threw up a few articles that got me thinking about just how far-reaching an impact it could have.
As we all know, the Olympics have been no stranger to controversy, but I was interested to discover that they have also been affected by the heightened ethical awareness that surrounds manufacturing, with claims last year that some of the official merchandise was being made using exploited labour. Ring any bells? This is a subject that is very much at the forefront of the fashion and retail industry at the moment, especially following the Primark debacle, and so we felt it was time to see how the printwear industry is faring under this increased scrutiny. See Paul Clapham's feature on page 27 for the industry's view on this.
Much has also been written about the technological advancements in Olympic swimwear, and with fabric technology being a key area in printwear at the moment, I wonder how much of this, if any, will filter through in the next few years. Something to watch out for perhaps.
Returning to the current issue there is plenty to be said about technology in our annual Jackets feature, starting on page 32.We also bring you the latest developments in the embroidery industry (starting on page 66) and highlight some promotional products to look out for in the run up to Christmas (sorry, but it will be here before we know it!). There's plenty more besides that, so happy reading!
