Transfers to success
Published:  03 June, 2005

An industrial hire company has set up transfer printing as an addition to its existing business, and made a success of it. Dan Raywood met Adlington Welding to learn more.

Last month we brought you information on Victory Design, who has recently rebranded its range of transfer films to easiMark and launched two new films for decoration on to sportswear and nylon fabrics in 2005.

To follow on from this, an opportunity arose to visit a client of Victory who have set up a small but thriving decoration section at its premises. The company is Adlington Welding, a plant hire firm based in Lancashire who supply welding equipment, generators, inverter units and cutting machines.

Adlington has its head office in Chorley, with other offices located in Teeside, Luton and Falkirk. It's primary business is as a plant hire firm, one project that has been provided is the building of the new Wembley Stadium in North West London.

Adlington's Sam Longmire explained that following customer demand for clothing and consumables from the company, he sourced hi-viz jackets and vests in the Far East and brought in bulk orders to the facility in Chorley.

Following the introduction of the hi-viz clothing, Sam also sourced polo shirts and workwear garments from a local distributor and began to decorate to the customer's specification. This has subsequently become the decoration arm of Adlington Welding, a service that it is able to offer to its customers for clear and prestigious clothing in the working environment.

Sam said that his original investigation had led him to use another transfer company, when we was not totally satisfied with the available consumables and service he looked around for another supplier and came across Victory Design, who offered materials for printing to meet Sam's requirements. He said, 'I was looking for something more advanced and they were able to broaden our horizons. Victory are able to supply next day which is how we work.'

The service incorporates controlled in-house decoration, customers can supply a basic idea of how they want the finished logo to look or supply a complete image. This is then worked on by Adlington depending on the quality of the original concept, and printed and cut using the Eco Jet printer.

The finished transfers are then printed on to the garments in-house, and supplied back to the customer over the counter.

Alternatively, Sam told me that the cut logos can be supplied direct to the customer who will then decorate their own garments themselves.

The typical customer of Adlington is involved in heavy industry, hence a lot of garments are quickly worn out or become dirty, so a lot of new garments are required in fast times for regular customers. Sam said, 'We can produce designs in no time, anywork that needs doing can be done.'

Adlington's decorating work is not limited to hi-viz and workwear though, as the company produces digitally printed stickers for machinery and recently produced a large flag for supporters of local Premiership side Bolton Wanderers.

Sam also explained that many thousands of pairs of gloves are sold across the country every week, and plain hi-viz garments are also available if required. He said, 'The biggest bulk of my printing part is hi-viz. The weirdest thing I've decorated was arm bands and wrist bands.'

The decoration doesn't end with transfers for Adlington though, as Sam said, 'We already to vast amounts of embroidery, we've just bought our first machine - an SWF single head embroidery machine from YES.'

The company has been in existence for around 20 years and has been working with Victory Design for around two years. In that time, business has continued to develop further and further to a point where the decorating side has become a significant part of the company's business, opposed to the 'extra service' as it was originally intended.
