An embroidery solution for jackets and outerwear
Published:  04 September, 2008

ETC says it is continuously working with its customers to find solutions to their embroidery difficulties. "With the peak season for outerwear garments upon us, customers are seeking remedies to make the embroidered areas of garments waterproof," it says. "We have two solutions for this problem, both cost effective and very easy to apply."

Soft and dry anti wet patches were developed and patented by ETC as a solution to the occurrence of wet areas appearing on garments due to water soaking through threads. The patches are made up of a non-woven fabric and waterproof membrane and are simply ironed onto the reverse of the embroidery to act as barrier to prevent water soaking through.

Large volume customers prefer these as the patch can be applied and the garment can be packed immediately without any need to wait for drying, says ETC.

Another solution for those who do not wish to heat press the patches is the Nikwax waterproof products, which are available in a liquid concentrate or a ready to use spray. Both are applied to the front of the embroidery. Using the Nickwax on the embroidery coats the threads with a barrier, preventing them from absorbing the water and carrying it through to the wearer.

Nickwax can be applied in a variety of ways: either with a brush, sponge or spray. It can also be purchased as a concentrated liquid, which is placed directly into the washing machine and run on a wool wash. This is perfect for those large jobs where it is more beneficial to waterproof the whole garment.

Nickwax is recommended by all the major brand companies for re-proofing outwear fabrics.

"Remember that natural fibre threads such as Viscose are more likely to absorb the wet and eventually rotting over time," says ETC.

It adds: "Often people presume that the needle holes allow the water penetration through the garment. Whilst this is true, the majority of the water is carried through by the thread acting as a sponge."
