A niche in sports
Published:  03 June, 2005

Dan Raywood met Team Colours, who has made a career out of remaining one step ahead of its competitors by meeting the needs of a previously under-provided niche.

There is a constant demand for sportswear in the promotional industry, be it for the local club rugby team, boys football team or school hockey squad. However, there is a shortage of companies prepared to invest in the manufacture of what could be deemed to be 'specialist' or minority sportswear.

This is where Team Colours come into the frame, the company is only two years old yet has already become known for the production of bespoke sportswear kits and accessories for pursuits such as netball, rugby and football. In fact, the manufacture for netball has led the company to produce the dresses for the England team under license to Mitre - which recently won the first prize of 'Best Designed Sports Kit' at the Sport Industry Awards.

It is with netball that the company started by spotting a niche. Team Colours' Stanley Rogers said, 'The competition was very weak so it wasn't hard for us to get into.'

The traditional netball kit consisted of a polo shirt and a skirt - which Team Colours can also provide - but a more feminine fit and stylish look is available with the netball dress. The new look was originally developed by players from Australia and New Zealand who the company claim 'took the sport more seriously.' As a result of the interest generated, it is estimated that around 64,000 girls now play the game regularly.

Team Colours do not offer an off the shelf range of netball kits, due to the necessary needs of size, style and colour demands so all orders are completed to specification and can be manufactured in the UK and delivered within two weeks.

Company Director Rosemary Carter said, 'We've changed the face of netball. Half the battle for teams is won if they go on the court looking and feeling good - you can have the advantage over your opponent that way.'

The company can also decorate your bespoke ordered garments, using transfer technology which is often the best option due to the untidy 'pull' that embroidery would have on the lycra fabric.

As well as netball, the company can also provide kits for football to your specification, with 21 different shirt styles available. The same option is also offered with rugby shirts, specialist fabrics such as breathable, wicking and airflow have been included recently to meet the demand for replication of modern styles.

Tracksuit’s is another sector where the company specialises, Rosemary said, 'With the tracksuits option, we can cater for all sports.' This is evident in the variety of teams and sports that have been supplied, as Team Colours tracksuits are now worn by clay pigeon shooters, darts and even morris dancers!

All of the ordering and bespoke specification is available on the Team Colours website, where you can design your own kit or tracksuit from a set number of patterns and styles.

The process is simple: you firstly choose your area of sport, the type of outfit, and then you are presented with a blank garment that you can fill in with your team colours. Each style also has details on the fabric content and size options that the company can offer.

Rosemary said, 'As Team Colours, we have worked hard to create stylish yet functional ranges that appeal to customers of all ages, and which can be produced within budget and on deadline. Our commitment has always been to provide the highest possible level of customer service, while maintaining exceptional manufacturing standards, which we believe makes our range the best in its field.'
