Andrea Charteris, PenCarrie's customer services manager, believes most people now understand the difference between organic and Fairtrade classifications. "Some may stop briefly to clarify in their own minds which is which - and whether it is organic or Fairtrade clothing that their customer is more interested in - before we talk through the different brands and styles available," she says.
"Whereas in the past we might have needed to explain the difference, what we say now to decorators is usually a reinforcement of their grasp of the terms. Green/ethical products have become so widespread on the high street, in clothing stores and in supermarkets, that people generally are much more familiar with the terms and their separate meanings."
She adds: "Demand for both organic and Fairtrade clothing is still growing and we feel sure it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. This is a trend that is being driven by what is happening in society, with all of us increasingly sensing the need to take responsibility for how the goods we buy are produced, to take responsibility for protecting the environment and safeguarding workers at risk of exploitation. Individuals and organisations are taking this very seriously now; no longer are green/ethical issues seen as some kind of passing bandwagon. Green and ethically produced products are here to stay; they are part of our everyday lives."
Two key brands in the field are Okarma (for organic cotton goods) and Wombat (for Fairtrade clothing). PenCarrie stocks all eight of Okarma's 100% certified organic cotton products which include t-shirts for men, women and children; a polo shirt; a drop shoulder sweat; a tote bag and a gymsac. The latest addition to the range is the OK31 Hooded Sweatshirt. Not only is this made from 100% certified GOTS and Control Union combed organic cotton brushed back jersey; the dyestuffs used are Oekotex and Control Union approved (the top comes in a choice of navy or black).
All 13 of Wombat's Fairtrade tops are also available from PenCarrie; seven of them are new for 2008 (which alone highlights the growth in demand). All Wombat tops are fashionable and funky in design and appeal especially to the youth market. For example, the WB171 Girls Wallaroo Top (made from 100% Fairtrade certified cotton, super soft single jersey) wins points for its fashionably longer length; its rouched and deep neckline; cap sleeves; and drawcord at hip level which then ties at the side. The vintage washed WB310 Hervey Hoodie (made from 100% Fairtrade cotton heavy jersey) also has tremendous youth appeal: firstly, it is a hoodie and secondly, it has many individual touches such as the concealed three button herringbone placket with contrast zig zag stitching below.
