I often receive calls from customers who are having issues after pressing their transfers. One of the main problems is an adhesive outline around the logo, which is caused by too much pressure on the heatpress.
I think some people believe that the higher the pressure they apply the better the bond to the fabric, but they are mistaken.
When you see this adhesive outline you have actually pushed the adhesive that should be holding the transfer to the garment away from the transfer backing. What can result is after just a few washes the transfer can come away from the garment.
The solution is to reset the pressure on your heatpress. However the majority of heatpresses sold in the UK market do not have a digital pressure gauge, so it is down to your own personal interpretation. One thing to bear in mind though is that the vast majority of heatseal products can be applied with a household iron.
Using a heatpress will no doubt create a much higher pressure from garment to transfer, with this in mind you will only need to press the majority of heatseal products with a medium pressure.
With the wide variety of garments available you will also need to adjust your heatpress pressure - but always close the press to gauge the pressure strength prior to applying the transfer.
Another issue customers come to us with is that when applying full colour logos onto garments they sometimes complain of ink coming away from the print after application.
Several factors can cause this. For example, when using a solvent based media customers do not leave their prints long enough for the solvents to evaporate before they apply application tape, or they try to transfer to the garments too quickly after printing.
There are a wide variety of products available that provide protection to the print whilst pressing, such as Teflon sheets, application papers and heat pads. Using the correct one for your chosen media is an important factor in preventing damage during heatpressing.
Other factors that can cause this problem are pressing too hot, using too much pressure or releasing the application tape too quickly. In most cases one or more of the factors above will cause the ink to come away from your full colour transfers even when using inkjet or sublimation transfers.
But with the correct application tapes, protective sheets, application temperatures & pressures you will not experience this type of problem.
