"Balmoral has the rare capacity to make fashioned ladies' knitted jackets in a proper corporatewear-style knitted fabric," says md Mike Carden. "I'm not aware of anyone else in the UK who can physically make the same styles," he adds, "and they have proved so popular, we are currently increasing capacity."

The stock styles of the fashioned knitted jackets are the medium-length ‘Iona' and the long-line ‘Melrose'. Integrally knitted button-holes mean that traditional cardigan-strapping is no longer needed, giving the garment a sleek, fitted, up-to-date look. Even the side slits are integrally knitted, rather than cut and over-locked as they would have been at one time.

"The Iona and the Melrose are a real step forward," says Carden. "You can see why they are so popular. And of course we can also make bespoke versions of them in other colours or with coloured trim."

The other ladies' knitwear that has taken off is the stretch-fabric sweater. Made in an ultra-fine 14 gauge viscose / nylon / elastane blend, they hug a ladies' shape in a way that a high street look demands, says Carden. Two styles are ex-stock - the ‘Selkirk' long-sleeve sweater and the ‘Kelso' three-quarter sleeve sweater.

Carden, based at Balmoral's Rannerdale office in Cumbria along with Ian Pollard, adds: "Balmoral now has an off-shore partner as well as our own Scottish production. That means we can combine our own knowledge with that of the off-shore partner to produce garments like the Selkirk and the Kelso. It's quite a departure for corporatewear."
