Westford Mill, the big value promotional bag brand, reports a dramatic increase in the sales of its cotton Tote bags over the past year.
The brand is also predicting continued UK sales growth, following the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Budget announcement on future charges on plastic shopping bags.
"Demand for our cotton Totes has exploded: the W100 Promo Shopper Tote and W101 Promo Shoulder Tote showed a 400% uplift in sales between 2006 and 2008," said Westford Mill's Alexis Molyneux. "Businesses and consumers are becoming ever more environmentally switched on and are buying into the ‘Bag for Life' message."
Alistair Darling's Budget pledge that the government will impose charges on single-use plastic carrier bags from as early as 2009, unless supermarkets make sufficient progress in voAndyary reduction targets by the end of this year, is certain to increase demand further, said Molyneux.
"The Chancellor's statement provides a window of opportunity for garment decorators to aggressively promote the benefits of reusable bags to their corporate and promotional customers," she said.
Molyneux also reports substantial interest from the trade in the newly launched Jute Shoulder Shopper, which was an "instant success" as a printed giveaway on the Beechfield Brands stand at the recent Printwear & Promotio exhibition.
