DTG DIGITAL
YES's user guide to DTG Digital ink jet printer inks
Published:  01 May, 2008

What are they?

The DTG inks used in this style of machine are water based pigment type. They were specifically developed for this style of machine as the print head on the smaller machines was originally developed for dye based inks. The white ink is different from the CMYK as it is made from suspended Titanium Dioxide and is the most difficult to make.

Can these inks print on things other than 100% cotton fabric?

Yes they can print onto hard surface products such as glass, metal etc although these must be pre-treated with DTG Uni-Primer. To make them scratch resistant and waterproof they must also be post-treated.

It is important to use the recommended ink?

Most definitely YES. DTG has gone to a lot of trouble making sure that the machine, the ink and the software match. It is also important to use the recommended pre-treat as this forms a partnership with the inks.

Can these inks be used on polyester?

No but there are other inks available now that can. Because of the different properties on polyester special inks had to be developed. These work in the same way as the ones for cotton but it is important to differentiate between them if you want good results.

Do the inks have to be cured?

Yes. Just like any other printed product the ink must be set and it is important that this is done to the standards stated by DTG. It is not enough just to give them a quick blast of heat. On hard surface products where they will be post-treated it is important that they are completely dry before coating them with anything else.

Why are the inks so expensive?

Can't answer that one but can agree with the statement. It seems that all ink used in ink jet printers is expensive. It is worth pointing out though that DTG has forced two price reductions to date and is pushing for more, so maybe the future will see lower cost where inks are concerned. It is also likely that prices will fall as the process gains in popularity.
