Member Case study: Fanéla
Published:  01 May, 2008

PROMOTA member Fanéla is a company that is fully aware of how health and safety policies affect its practices and workforce.  A supplier of printed and embroidered promotional garments, the company has 18 years' experience in the industry.

During this time, Fanéla believes it has developed an in-depth understanding of all aspects of the industry, including the health and safety side.

Geeta Bhatia, HR manager of Fanéla, said: "As our company has grown in both size and stature, we have ensured that our health and safety policies have remained up-to-date and that they fully comply with legislation. For example, three years ago our building underwent a major refurbishment and we made sure that we revised our policy in line with this expansion - we are careful not to take anything for granted."

The company is a one-stop service to the trade with screen-print, embroidery, warehousing, in-house design and office suites all under one roof.

Consequently, there are many different health and safety risks that the company's employers could potentially come into contact with. According to Geeta, the most important health and safety issue the company feels it must address is ensuring that its facilities are up-to-date, "providing a clean, healthy and safe environment for all to work in."

She added: "Essentially, we feel we have a great responsibility to all of our workers, whatever their role, and their families. Therefore, we do our best to take into account any concerns that they may have and, if anything does become apparent, we deal with it immediately. Communication is the key to both solving and preventing problems."

The hardest task the Leicestershire-based company feels it must administer is ensuring that proper housekeeping is undertaken by all. The company has addressed this potential risk by employing an on-site cleaner, creating clear ‘tidy-up' procedures for all staff to follow, assigning an independent advisor to help write its risk assessment, and letting all the workforce know that it is everyone's responsibility to help maintain a safe working environment.

Essentially, Fanéla's health and safety policies have helped the company guarantee that customers can reply upon its services, products and people.  Geeta added: "In our sector of the industry, we pride ourselves on being a company that has all the facilities that a modern-day workplace requires. This may come at a cost, but we want our staff to work in a safe and healthy environment."
