Feel Original
Published:  04 April, 2008

Showcased on the Prestige Leisure stand was Jerzees Colours' latest ‘story', the Original range - a collection of retail-inspired casualwear garments, which reinforce the brand's aim to produce garments that people will value and actually want to wear.

In terms of styling, the garments are relaxed-looking. There are three T-shirts, a polo, and two sweatshirt styles, all of which excel in what Jerzees Colours calls ‘the 3 Fs' - fabric, fit and features.

Fabric

The fabric used for all styles in the Original story has a soft-touch finish for comfort and a feeling of luxury. This finish is achieved by using a peaching or sueding process where the fabric is guided horizontally over sueding rollers and delivered by a plaiter or rolled on big batch.

The sueding rollers are covered with abrasive bristles, similar in appearance to a toothbrush. This helps to break some of the small fibres on the exterior of the material and teases them out. Teasing the broken fibre ends is what creates the peached appearance and feel.

Fit

In terms of comparisons to other styles, the 220M, 220L and the 224M are all based on the 110M fit, while the 221M polo is based on the 121M vintage polo.

The 222M and 223M sweatshirts are deliberately designed to be worn loose and so their fit is baggier than the Jerzees Colours standard 262M shape.

Features

There are lots of little extra features packed into all the Original styles, which work together to give the wearer a feeling that they've got something a bit special, says marketing spokeswoman Kirsty Anderson. These include tone-on-tone velvet taping, chunky trims, and contrasting, velvet stitching. "We call it ‘Feel Original', partly because of the soft feel to the garments, but also because there is an almost retro, heritage feel to the range," she says.

"It's about doing something that sets you apart from everybody else, without being outlandish. It's not about fashions that come and go, it's about classic, well-made pieces that are still fashionable."

This is evident in the Striped Campus Polo, which has been carefully designed to ensure the space between the stripes leaves enough room for decoration. Indeed, the range has been developed to be the perfect base for designer/retail inspired decoration and works particularly well with all modern styles of logo and technique, says Anderson. However, there is no technical limitation on the type of decoration that can be used - the soft touch finish to the fabric does not preclude any technique.

The styles:

  • 220M & 220L - College Tees (long & short sleeved)
  • 224M Baseball Tee
  • 221M Striped Campus Polo
  • 222M Full-Zip Original Sweat
  • 223M Original Hooded Top
The range is available in the following colours: ‘old' navy, light oxford, deep chocolate, vanilla, wine red, jade and white.
