With the continuing changes to the clothing market as a result of cheaper overseas manufacturing and widespread low cost distribution, school retailers, school shops and manufacturers of schoolwear have had to adapt their processes in order to succeed in a competitive marketplace, as Sharon Norris, customer services manager at Gymphlex Ltd explains:
"The price disparity between bargain supermarket garments as opposed to the more expensive garments produced by Gymphlex is undeniable, but retailers and manufacturers have started to operate in new ways in order to continue to offer exceptional quality and durability at affordable prices.
"Gymphlex has extended its range of stock items and is holding more items in stock. This enables schools, through retailers and school shops to keep costs low by purchasing from the stock range and cost effectively embellishing the garments with Gymphlex's embroidery or badging services."
Gymflex says shops are now ordering from the company far later in the school calendar in order to manage their budgets and to ensure the schools they supply do not change their uniforms policy with little notice. "This is understandable but does mean that Gymphlex needs to keep its stock levels high in order to satisfy this last-minute demand," says Norris.
She adds: "Manufacturers like Gymphlex have had to review their production processes in order to reduce their costs as far as possible. However we remain committed to UK manufacturing, where our primary focus will continue to be the production of high quality made to order garments. There will always be a need for one-off specials for pupils which do not fit into the popular sizes and Gymphlex have built their reputation on delivering such one-offs."
In terms of trends for 2008 Gymphlex says it has not yet noted any major new changes in school sportswear. Tracksuits continue to be popular as they can serve as a practical kit for most sports, or as useful cover up garments for schools on their way to competitive matches.
