Helping decorators offer a complete service
Published:  28 February, 2008

"The schoolwear market definitely changed when supermarkets entered the arena,"says David Abrahams, marketing manager at PenCarrie. "However, decorators currently have a real advantage over other outlets, in that decorators can offer schools a complete service in a way that few, if any, supermarkets can hope to do. This includes the major reassurance of continuity of garment colour from one order to the next: all the brands we carry are scrupulous about this."

Abrahams continues, "Supermarkets like to focus on the plain basics (such as skirts and trousers) which carry no decoration but it can be so much more cost-effective for a school to source everything from a garment decorator, and not just the ‘identifying' items (such as sweatshirts, jackets, team sportswear and school bags which schools want decorated with their emblem). If schools sell all items of uniform, by buying in volume they will be keeping selling prices reasonable for parents and can put any profits towards day-to-day running costs or any special expenses."

Sweatshirts and polo shirts are two staple school styles that are always in great demand, says PenCarrie. Raglan style sweatshirts are particularly popular, especially Fruit of the Loom's SS8B and the 762B from Jerzees Schoolgear. Both are available in standard school colours. Pique polo shirts from both brands are also popular and include the 539B Kids Pique Polo Shirt from Jerzees Schoolgear and the SS11B from Fruit of the Loom. All are available in a broad range of colours that are popular with schools; adult sized versions of each style (for larger pupils, teachers and parent helpers) are also available.

Safety of children when out and about is always paramount, particularly as more schools and parents now participate in ‘Walking Bus' schemes, and PenCarrie has many high visiibility styles to offer which carry EN1150 certification. Amongst these are Result's RS21B Kids Safeguard High Viz Vest and RS212B Kids Safeguard High Viz Tabard; and RTY Workwear's HV77 Kids High Visibility Vest.

Sports teamwear is another sector of schoolwear that can reap significant rewards for the garment decorator, says PenCarrie. The extended range of children's activewear can be found on pages 232 and 233 of PenCarrie's latest catalogue or at http://www.pencarrie.com/.

Finally, don't forget that the humble T-shirt has a multitude of uses for schools: as extra-curricular club wear; for school trips and summer camps; and for souvenir sales at fun days when the school may be open to the public. One ideal choice, says PenCarrie, because it is good quality, practical, comfy and comes in a choice of 30 colours, is Gildan's GD05B Kids Heavy Cotton T-Shirt. An adult version, GD05, also comes in 30 colours. PenCarrie can normally supply all sizes in all colours for next day delivery.
