Ethics, fashion and fit are key factors for 2008

PenCarrie agrees that there have been many developments in the t-shirt sector over the years. David Abrahams, marketing manager, comments: "The main change is that now there is so much choice in t-shirts. Today's customers can choose men's and ladies' styles, classic in design or highly fashionable, all differently cut and in a variety of fabric mixes and weights. In addition, there is now exceptional choice in colours for t-shirts - Gildan's GD02 is available in 60 different shades." 

Moving on to ethical issues, he notes: "This year we will see an increase in demand for organic cotton t-shirts and Fairtrade garments. This will still be a niche market but our sales figures highlight the impact of Okarma's OK10 Organic Premium T-Shirt and its OK11 Ladies Organic Fitted T-Shirt since the company's launch early in 2007. Okarma has extended its range of organic cotton clothing for 2008; and that Wombat has significantly increased the number of its Fairtrade styles too."

The impact of fashion has also played a part in developing the sector, says Abrahams. He cites SkinniFit's new fashionably scoop necked and longer length SK254 Tunic with Belt as just one of the styles likely to be a hit in 2008. Another fashion-oriented brand, Wombat, is also offering a longer length, scoop necked, belted design for women, the WB171 Wallaroo Top. The brand's new WB167 Maheno Top, also for women, puts another spin on a standard t-shirt, with its smock effect front, v-neck and cap sleeves.

"Simple styles for the ladies also sell well," continues Abrahams. Favourites include SkinniFit's SK101 Modern Essential T-Shirt (a fitted style with shaped side seams in a 96% cotton/4% elastane single jersey). It comes in 25 colours. Also for women are Kustom Kit's K709 Huggy Fits V Neck T- Shirt; and the HA716 BeauTy V Neck T-Shirt from Hanes. For men, Jerzees' new 220M Original College T-Shirt is a classic t-shirt style, which Abrahams expects to sell well.
