Shaping up
Published:  06 February, 2008

T-shirts have turned almost full circle since they were first "invented" in the mid 20th century, says Skinnifit. "What we now know as the T-shirt started off life as underwear - designed purely to provide an extra layer between the skin and the rather itchy woolly jumpers sported by the armed forces at the time," it says.

T-shirts became both visible and cool courtesy of Marlon Brando and James Dean, and have subsequently become possibly the most recognised and popular means of displaying everything from witty slogans, club allegiances and brand names to being used as tourist souvenirs.

T-shirt shapes have been subject to trends too, says the company: from the over-sized baggy look of the 80's (think "Frankie Says...") to the skin-tight cropped garments in the early 90's. Thankfully, the look seems to have become more relaxed now.

Skinnifit claims it has been at the forefront of T-shirt development, being instrumental in the introduction of T-shirts designed specifically for women. Skinnifit's '08 collection includes more than 15 T-shirt styles from sleeveless through to long-sleeved styles, from 100% cotton through to the cotton elastane mix that combines comfort and fit with performance and shape retention. The team is predicting the continuation of the current relaxed look and slimmer - thought definitely not tight - fit for women.

According to Skinnifit there has also been a distinct and noticeable change in the men's T-shirt market too. "Men want the choice between those shapeless, baggy, ill-fitting (need we say any more?) tees of old, and the modern-fitting and ultimately much better looking tees of today," it says, adding: "In terms of being a promotional vehicle, surely it makes more sense to decorate a modern tee that people would actually be glad of wearing?"

If you're looking for something new and completely in-line with retail T-shirt trends, then its time to look at the trend for lighterweight tees, suggests Skinnifit. Perfect for printing these are the tees that "all the young dudes" are wearing on the street. Skinnifit and Skinnifitmen have introduced a range of pure cotton fineweight tees for both men and women including a men's deeper-v neck T and a woman's tunic top.

It adds: "The t-shirt market is an exciting place to be - and there's no excuse any more for issuing shockingly bad fitting tee shirts!"
