DTG pushes print boundaries
Published:  17 January, 2008

DTG has released confirmation that its textile inks can now be used on transfer paper.

The printing method is exactly the same as that used for white garments, said DTG, but the textile is replaced with a transfer paper, which is then used, post print, in exactly the same way as it would normally be.

The company has also introduced a range of new polyester inks, which it claims overcome the problem of printing direct onto 100% polyester.

“As good as direct to garment ink jet printing is, it has struggled in the past with polyester,” explained a spokesman. “If the garment was a cotton/poly mix then there was a chance of achieving a decent print but if it was 100% polyester then the quality of the print would suffer. But with the new polyester inks this is no longer the case.”

DTG claimed this was a technical breakthrough that would benefit the user by making the machine even more flexible by opening up a wider range of printable products.

“In the past polyester has been the territory of sublimation but now DTG users can print onto cotton and poly' using the same machine. In fact with the D1 machine, the first dual head printing machine, the front head can even be loaded with four channels of each ink enabling back to back printing of mixed media,” said the spokesman.

“Ink jet printing direct to garments has come a long way during the past couple of years but much of the development has remained with the original concept of the media needing to be predominantly cotton.

“However, DTG has continually pushed the boundaries and was one of the first to utilise this style of printing with hard surface products.”

Already well known for its hardware development, DTG claimed it was now demonstrating a desire to balance this with research into software and consumables.

“As you can see, this has resulted in new inks as well as new uses for those already available,” added the spokesman.
