The UK’s largest dedicated schoolwear retailer has launched a scheme to enable schools to offer lower income families vouchers towards the cost of certain uniform items.
‘Uniform for All’, devised by National Schoolwear Centres, develops a fund per school which increases with every item of school-specific uniform sold. Vouchers will be distributed to parents at the discretion of the school Governors.
It comes as the school specific uniform sector (uniform that is personalised with a badge or logo) is under pressure from the government to make its offering more affordable for parents.
Following the publication of the Department for Children, Schools and Families recent guidelines, which sought to address problems that some parents have in affording school uniforms, National Schoolwear Centres decided to formalise the scheme, which it had previously trialled in schools.
Fifty pence from the sale of every item of school-specific uniform will go into the fund, 50% of which is donated directly by National Schoolwear Centres. Graham Michelli, md of National Schoolwear Centres, said: “School uniform plays an extremely important role in children’s lives and should be an outfit to be proud of.We are keen to make sure this is true for all children and would urge schools to sign up to this and similar schemes which will cost them nothing but could mean a great deal to lower income families.”
