Education for the nation
Subli Nation, established just over two years ago, has quickly established itself as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of dye sublimation equipment and consumables, with one of the largest product ranges available. We spoke to director Kevin Lewis about the latest developments
Published:  22 November, 2007

Subli Nation is an official dealer of Sawgrass Artainium dye sublimation inks and the George Knight range of digital heat presses; and stocks a large range of dye sublimation blanks including the Unisub, Vapour Apparel and Subli soft ranges.

The company has grown rapidly over the past two years, but remains true to its roots, says director Kevin Lewis: “Although we’ve had to grow quickly to cope with increasing levels of business, we’re still a small company and therefore continue to offer the same friendly, personable customer service that our customers love.

“Over the last 12 months we’ve been improving systems, mainly with warehousing, dispatch and invoicing, to ensure that we can continue to offer the same kind of support while offering a much more reliable and professional service than we were able to in the beginning.”

The Subli-nation dye sublimation online forum (www.subli-nation.co.uk/forum) now has over 500 members, and is a source of help and advice from those already involved in the process. In addition, the Subli Nation online shop (www.sublination. co.uk) offers easy online ordering.

Enquiries can be made via the website directly with live online help, which enables customers to talk to a member of staff directly from their PC. There is even a text service, allowing customers to ask questions and receive replies via their mobile phones – simply send a text to 07797 800531 with questions that can be answered concisely.

Subli Nation introduced the “Mug Machine” to the UK earlier in the year. Lewis comments: “The Mug machine is a low cost reliable alternative to mug presses, suitable mainly for medium volume production, sold at the same kind of price as a cheap Chinese mug press – but sold with 12 months next day swap out warranty.

“They’re not good for doing one-offs, but are great for medium volume production, as they produce four mugs at a time in around 10 minutes. We still sell the George Knight DK3 mug press, which is one of the best presses on the market, and is the perfect choice for anyone who is also doing one-offs and prefers to use presses, but for a low cost solution to medium volume mug printing, you can’t really go wrong with the mug machine.”

Subli Nation has an online shop but doesn’t offer a physical catalogue at the moment because the range is increased so frequently. “However, we do expect to have a catalogue available within the next few months, including one without prices for customers to use as their own,” says Lewis.

The company has recently added a range of fabrics to its range, including Subli canvas, and is soon to be stocking stretcher frames. “We also have aluminium water bottles now in stock, the glitter mugs, and colour change mugs,” says Lewis. “Baby grows have recently been added to the Subli soft range that we stock, and in the vapour apparel range, we’re now stocking the vapour ladies range, and we’ll soon be adding the vapour kids range. Our range of products is currently in excess of 500, and will probably be at around 750 within the next 12 months.”

Sublimation made easy with new Instructional DVD

Subli Nation has released a new Dye Sublimation tutorial DVD, aimed at going the extra mile to help and advise its customers.

Kevin Lewis explains: “A lot of customers are completely new to dye sublimation, so we’ll spend as much time as needs be helping customers out on the phone or via the various guides in the members section of the website. However, I’ve always been aware that it wasn’t really enough.

“Even if we spent an hour or more face to face showing the customer exactly what to do, it still wouldn’t work, as most people don’t take everything in from one demonstration.”

Lewis decided that what customers needed was a comprehensive instructional guide to take them from start to finish, and which was always there for them to go back to whenever they might need it.

So, working in partnership with a professional film production company, Subli Nation has put together a fully comprehensive dye sublimation instructional DVD programme.

The DVD is split up into seven main chapters:

  1. What is dye sublimation
  2. Equipment & consumables
  3. Working with artwork
  4. Printing
  5. Pressing
  6. Safety, trouble shooting, tips & tricks
  7. Increasing your product range
“The amount of work put in over the past six months to create just over an hour of tutorial is unbelievable, so I very much hope our customers find the DVD a great help,” says Lewis.

“Now, from the comfort of their own sofa, customers can simply sit with a drink and watch their TV for an hour to gain all the important knowledge required before getting started. “This will save a lot of time and effort and the sress of trying to gather bits of information from here and there. And if you can’t remember it all at once and need a reminder at any stage, you just put the DVD on and browse to the relevant chapter – easy!”

The DVD is retailing for £49.99 and is free to anyone who buys a start up package from the company
