Newcastle-based technology firm Kiss Cut Technologies has launched a new self-weeding inkjet textile transfer paper. One of the greatest drawbacks of existing and potential transfer papers has always been the so called ‘polymer window’ or ‘A4 effect’, says the company. This is essentially the excessive polymer left behind by the non-image area of a print. Many users have overcome part of this issue by hand cutting images or using a cutter plotter to weed the images digitally.
However, Kiss Cut Technologies has addressed this issue and developed a self-weeding inkjet transfer paper for printing to textiles using an inkjet printer and pressing with a standard heat press to transfer only the image area to the garment.
“The technology couldn’t be simpler to use,” explains Dr Simon Daplyn, technical manager of Kiss Cut Technologies.
“A standard Epson printer is used to print to Kiss Cut Paper, it is pressed for less than 10 seconds on a heat press and when you peel the paper away, only the image is transferred. This is not a soft feel paper in which the polymer is there, literally only the image area is transferred.
“If combined with Kiss Cut inks, this paper gives prints with outstanding wash resistance. The resulting product has the look and feel of a screen print without the high set up costs of traditional processes.”
The development will enable the smaller user to print short to medium run retail standard garments with minimal capital expenditure, says the company. The only hardware required is an entry-level Epson printer and a heat press.
A Kiss Cut print can be further embellished with specialised textile foils so in effect a digital foiling method is now available, says Kiss Cut. “Foil is heat pressed onto the garment and when peeled the foil only sticks to the image areas. This development allows the user to produce garments with an instant wow factor whilst maintaining such low capital costs,” claims Daplyn.
Roger Tirrell, European sales manager for Kiss Cut, added: “The reaction from distributors during demonstrations of the process has been overwhelming.
“Many of them realise that the digital decorator no longer has expensive capital equipment purchases as a barrier to entry, as the Kiss Cut system simply needs an inexpensive Epson desktop printer to operate. This allows the user to very simply and cheaply produce garments that would normally involve equipment costing thousands of dollars.”
