Wombat has produced three products for women in 100% Fairtrade certified cotton in response to growing consumer concern over how products are produced.
The three garments – the Noosa vest, Tissica Tee and Airlie top – are all built on Fairtrade principles, which deliver both sustainable incomes to small scale farmers and ensure that they have the skills and are empowered to build their own futures, says Wombat.
The Noosa vest is a double layer reversible vest in Mocha and Aqua or Indigo and Calico; the Tissica Tee features a fake bikini insert, ruched front and raw edging; while the Airlie is ideal for the beach, featuring contrasting shoestring ties and a fake wrap front. “Wearing this cheeky little top (especially with the Nymph Island shorts) is definitely naughty but nicer to those that need it,” says Wombat.
Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for disadvantaged cotton farmers. Many farmers in these developing countries have to contend with fluctuating prices that may not even cover what it costs to produce their crop.
Fairtrade promises a stable price, which covers their production costs, along with a premium that the cotton grower can invest in projects that enhance social, economic and environmental development. In India farmers have agreed to spend the premium on health insurance, water conservation and income-generating schemes.
