At a special ceremony in London, the Lord Chief Justice presented the first Award for Social Responsibility for small and medium sized companies to Arthur and Irene Allen, founders of Listawood, the Norfolk-based manufacturer.
This was one of two awards presented at Marlborough House by Lord Woolf in front of 250 prominent business leaders, parliamentarians and ambassadors. The judging panel were impressed by the organisational culture which the Allens have fostered at Listawood, making special reference to the flexible working patterns which have empowered many of their staff to contribute to the success of the company.
Praising the two 2004 Award winners, the Lord Chief Justice said, 'My warm congratulations go to the winners of the first awards this year. Their achievements are admirable and important. They are exemplars of responsible capitalism and responsible capitalism is of benefit to us all. It supports the culture of recognising human rights and the rule of law.'
Arthur Allen said, 'We are delighted that Listawood's achievements have been recognised in this way and it's a tribute to the many people within the company who have helped make it a good place to work. We're also a little surprised that what seems to us to be a matter of common sense and common decency should attract such attention.'
Listawood started in 1987, taking on one employee for a week's work. The company now employs over 200 people and has become a cluster of related businesses making mouse mats, spraying and decorating mugs, distributing computer accessories and selling print equipment and supplies into the dye-sublimation market.
The Fakenham based company has offices in Munich, Antwerp and Paris. Earlier this year the Allens were made MBE's in recognition of the innovative working practices developed at Listawood. For further information contact Listawood on 01485 529100 or visit the website at www.listawood.co.uk.
