David Luke launches search to find ’16 Under 16′ champions of change

Eco-uniform manufacturer David Luke is on a mission to find 16 young champions of change operating in local communities across the UK.

Pioneering Kids Against Plastic founders Amy and Ella Meek have been enlisted as campaign ambassadors and will help to raise awareness of how to enter the search by offering unique insights into the world of youth social action through their own tireless campaigning against plastic waste. They will also join the judging panel to give a peer to peer voice in the final selection of the 16.

They said: “We think it’s really important for children and young people to make a difference while they have the power of youth on their side.

“They shouldn’t wait until they are an adult to be heard – they should be heard now. Children and young people have the loudest voices, so it’s really important they spread the word about what they do.”

Working in collaboration with Eco Schools, the ’16 Under 16′ search will speak directly to young people in order to seek out those who are really making a difference with their eco-inspired actions.

Kathryn Shuttleworth, David Luke’s MD, said: “David Luke Schoolwear is a pioneer of eco-uniform and has been using recycled polyester made from plastic bottles in school uniform since 2012. We estimate that we’ve prevented 20 million two-litre plastic bottles from going to landfill since launching our eco-uniform range. Innovation in eco is at the heart of our corporate social responsibility as a business. We see ’16 Under 16′ as a platform for the next generation to share their stories and inspire others to engage in issues that are important to them.

“We are looking for champions of change with a strong sustainability story. Maybe you have started a blog about an environmental issue or have campaigned to reduce the use of plastic in your school. You might be a champion litter picker that loves to keep your local park or beach clean. Whatever your eco passion, we want to hear your story.”

Any person living in the UK under the age of 16 can enter. Deadline for entries is midnight on Monday, June 25.

The final 16 will be chosen by a panel of eco experts. Once assembled, the final 16 will come together at a Festival of Inspiration in July where they will receive mentoring and support from a host of influential speakers.
